Privacy.
The short version: dot. has no account and no ads, and doesn't track you. What you say stays on your phone and in your own iCloud, except when dot. talks back. Then the words it needs are sent to Claude, by Anthropic, to work out the answer, unless you turn on Private mode.
The app
What stays with you
Your recordings, notes, the places and songs you allow, and your conversations with dot. are kept on your iPhone and Apple Watch, and synced through your own private iCloud. We can't see any of it.
When dot. talks with you
To answer you, dot. sends some things through our server to Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. It sends:
- what you just said or typed;
- the thoughts it needs for the answer: the one you're on, your recent ones, and a short summary dot. writes about what you care about;
- the name of a nearby place, if you've let dot. remember places;
- the time and your time zone.
Our server passes this to Anthropic and doesn't keep it. Anthropic uses it to answer you, under its commercial terms. It doesn't use it to train its models, and it deletes it after a short time. When dot. looks something up on the web, Claude does the search.
dot. also uses Claude, in the same way, to give your notes short titles and to write the occasional line that brings a thought back.
Private mode (in Settings) turns all of this off. Nothing you say leaves your phone, and Apple's on-device model answers instead. The answers are simpler.
What our server keeps
- A random ID for your phone. It isn't your name, your email or Apple's device ID.
- A key that proves requests come from the real dot. app (Apple's App Attest).
- How many requests your phone made each day, so one phone can't use up everyone's share. We delete this after 7 days.
Our server runs on Cloudflare, which, like any web host, sees the internet address a request comes from.
Permissions
- Microphone and speech: to hear you. Your voice is turned into text on your iPhone wherever Apple supports that. Your recordings are never sent to us or to Anthropic.
- Location (if you allow it): to remember where you said something, and to bring it back when you're there again. Apple Maps turns the spot into a place name.
- Calendar (if you allow it): to block time for something, or to bring a thought back before you see someone. Your calendar stays on your phone.
- Music (if you allow it): to remember the song that was playing.
- Notifications: they're made on your phone. We don't send them from a server.
Sharing and deleting
If you pass something to a friend, you choose who gets it, using your phone's share sheet. Erase everything in Settings deletes everything dot. has on your phone and in your iCloud, and gives your phone a new random ID.
What dot. doesn't do
There's no account, no ads, and no analytics or tracking tools, and nothing is sold. dot. isn't made for children under 13.
This website
If you tap "Get early access", we keep the email address you type. We use it for a short "you're on the list" email, a beta invite if you ask for one, and one email when dot. is out on the App Store. Emails are stored and sent by Resend, in its EU (Ireland) region. We keep your email until we've sent that launch email, or until you ask us to delete it.
We also count visits, so we know if the site is working: how many people came, which site or link sent them, and whether they were on a phone or a computer. We count this ourselves, without cookies and without any outside analytics company, and we never store anything that could identify you. The site runs on Fly.io. Its font is loaded from Google Fonts, so your browser contacts Google to fetch it.
Your choices
Reply to any email from us with "remove", or write to hello@heyydot.com, and we'll delete your email. You can also ask what we hold about you. If you're in the UK and unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the ICO. If anything here changes, we'll update this page and the date below.
